In 2015 my first litter of Belgian Malinois were born in my dining room. The litter was the product of two amazing lines – Broadcreek Kennels out of Henderson Maryland has had the top Belgian Malinois in the United States for the last 20 years. No How Kennels out of Finland is reknowned for developing an exquisite line that balances work with conformation.
As a puppy, Finn, the father of the litter, was recognized for his wonderful temperament and excellent confirmation.
His owner, Debbie Williams Keith, is a good friend and mentor. Debbie has shown Malinois in the conformation ring and is also known for her agility titles on multiple dogs as well as tracking and herding titles. When it comes to a dog that can “do it all”, Debbie knows her stuff! When she courageously imported this young male from Finland, she hoped that he would be a wonderful addition to her kennel. When he won Best of Breed at Westminster, her hopes and dreams were recognized.
In the meantime, I was busy learning show handling with my first show girl. Grand Champion Broadcreek’s You Were Meant For Me was an 8 week old puppy when she was entrusted to me, and I was told to learn “show handling”. “Jewel” was a handful and a ton of fun. When she earned her Champion title at 9 months and her Grand Champion title at 18 months, despite my beginner handling foibles, I knew she was also something special!
Jewel went on to train in Agility, and obedience, and earned her Coursing Ability title, but before she competed in any of those venues, the stars aligned and she met up with her childhood sweetheart, Finn, and magic was made!
On Thanksgiving Day, 2015, a litter of 7 puppies was born. With Daddy Finn and Mommy Jewel, we knew these tykes would be special. It was a star crossed litter.
